History of the Study

The NIH and NIMH have supported our network for over a decade so that we can continue asking questions about autism. The research questions we have asked in the past are different from the research questions we are asking now. Our study is divided into three waves. Each wave focuses on different questions related to autism.

Wave 1 (2012-2017)

The first wave of this study helped us understand how the thinking, behavior, and genetics of autistic people can differ based on their sex.

The second wave of the study focused more on autistic females and understanding their experiences. It was also about how autistic brains change with age and how sex affects this. It was also about how genetics and brain changes affect each other.

Wave 2 (2017-2022)

For this wave, we are working to expand our understanding of how a person’s many different identities may affect when they receive an autism diagnosis. We are recruiting teens and young adults who are autistic or think they might be autistic.
